How to Reach a New Finish
There is No Finish Line
I recently discovered this 1977 Nike ad campaign, “There is No Finish Line.” Curious to understand the deeper meaning of this branding message, I started to challenge my own definition of finish line. Surely, as a runner and business owner my daily life consists of setting goals, committing to habits, and taking necessary action to achieve my goals. In essence, I know only one direction and that’s reaching towards the finish line.
Yet, the Nike ad ends with this profound statement — “Beating the competition is relatively easy. But beating yourself is a never ending commitment.” Purpose driven individuals know that to reach your personal best on this life-long journey — there is no finish line.
Our lives despite circumstances remain ever evolving in pursuit of our own happiness and success. For the most productive competition starts with a commitment to yourself and a mindset of “a new finish.”
Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon aspires a mantra, “it’s still day one and Amazon is never finished.” Bezos knows that great companies and leaders are always in beta-mode while evolving, getting better and never settling for “finished.” Is this true for you?
Start now. Each day offers you an opportunity to learn more, do more, be more, grow more in your life, career and to create a new finish. All of us have the power to improve ourselves and the world around us. The choice is clearly yours to start now because there is no finish line.
