Finding Focus to Create Extraordinary Results
The summers before my children entered their senior year in high school, we would pack the car for a road trip and visit many college campuses. It was a way to narrow the field of possibilities and overwhelming choices – all in search of finding that “one school.” At the end of our campus visit, I would ask my child – what is the “one thing” this college does exceptionally well? That one question made the biggest difference in their college decision process because it provided focus and eased the stress of a big life decision.
The One Question Makes the Difference
Let’s say you’re a business owner who wants to achieve extraordinary results and lead a big life. But the tyranny of the urgent keeps you from what’s really important – and you feel overwhelmed, frustrated and “stuck.” You’ve developed some habits that are blocking your success. And the barrage of emails, texts, messages, calls and meetings keep you from your most important work. You want more productivity, more income, and more time for yourself, your family and your friends. So how do you breakthrough?
Extraordinary Results
In the book “The One Thing,” author Gary Keller starts each day by asking, “What’s the ONE THING I can do such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?” Keller claims this one foundational habit enables him to experience extraordinary results in the important areas of his life: spiritual life, physical health, personal life, key relationships, job, business and financial life. Each area is a foundation for the next.
The Focusing Question can direct you to your ONE THING. You can also include a time frame – such as “right now” or “this year” or even in ten years all pointing you at outcomes to aim for.
Daily Success Routine
So how can you make THE ONE Thing part of your daily success routine?
1. Understand the concept and believe that it can make a difference in your life.
2. Use the focusing question daily.
3. Make it a habit and stick to it.
4. Set up reminders. “The ONE Thing = Extraordinary Results”
5. Share your ONE Thing with others for support and inspiration.
This one habit can become your foundation for success, so keep asking that ONE THING and experience extraordinary results every day of your life. Just like my children did in selecting that ONE college to reach for their educational goals.
